1996 Volkswagen Golf
The 1996 Volkswagen Golf sees some features return and some features leave. A
new model is also introduced that uses a turbo-diesel engine and promises to provide
better fuel economy. A lot of new features were also introduced, with Volkswagen
aiming to make Golf a safer and more comfortable car.
The 1996 Volkswagen Golf is available in four models: the 2-door GTI and GTI
VR6, the 4-door GL and the new 4-door TDI trim. The GTI VR6 is equipped with a
2.8 liter V6 engine that produces 172 hp of power while both the GTI and the GL
are equipped with a 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 172 hp of
power. The TDI is equipped with the new 1.9 liter inline 4-cylinder turbo-diesel
engine that produces 90 hp of power and provides the best value in fuel economy
among the four models, traveling nearly 50 miles in highway with just 1 gallon
of fuel. Standard transmission for all models is a 5-speed manual transmission
while the 4-speed automatic transmission is available for the GL and GTI trims.

Standard exterior features for 1996 includes rear window defogger for all models,
alloy wheels for the GTI and GTI VR6 trims, and power windows for the GTI VR6
trim. Other new standard features include tinted glass, rear spoiler, and a theft-deterrent
system. The GTI adds a cruise control while the premium GTI VR6 is equipped with
standard air conditioning system, power sunroof and a sport-tuned suspension.
The dashboard-mounted glovebox returns on all models for 1996, after it was removed
in 1994. Safety features were also enhanced with all models now equipped with
dual front airbags, daytime running lights, side-impact protection and new emergency
locking retractors for the seatbelts that eliminate the need for locking clips
with child safety seats. ABS brakes are also available for all models and standard
for the GTI VR6 model.
