1997 Volkswagen Golf
After establishing a name for all its trim levels in the market, Volkswagen further
enhances the performance of the Golf with improved engine and drivetrain parts
as well as new standard features. The four previous models were retained in 1997,
offering new and improved features, while new models arrived late during the year.
The new models include the Jazz, K2, and Trek.

The engine specification remained the same yet improved in many ways. The 2.0
liter 4-cylinder engine for both the GL and GTI models were refined by adding
a modified intake cross flow cylinder head that provides for a quieter ride and
a quieter running engine. The turbo-diesel engine for the TDI trim was also improved
by adding a direct injection system that makes it quieter, cleaner and more fuel
efficient than the previous diesel engine. All models are still equipped with
the 5-speed manual transmission while the 4-speed automatic transmission remains
optional for all models except for the GTI VR6 and TDI models.
The 1997 Volkswagen Golf is also more equipped compared to the previous year's
models. Standard equipments for the base model include power steering, split folding
rear seats, dual outside mirrors, 14 inch tires, and rear wiper/washer. Other
new features for all models include a third brake light relocated to the rear
window, reflectors on all doors, and new cargo area lighting. Safety features
were also enhanced, which now includes child safety door locks aside from the
already standard power door locks and windows, and dual front airbags. The ABS
brakes continue to be standard on the GTI and GTI VR6 models while optional for
all other models.
