The 2005 Volkswagen Golf will be released about midyear of 2005 while the GTI model will be released late in 2004. The most noticeable change that the Volkswagen Golf would showcase is its exterior design. Although the styling is basically the same, following the two-box design of its previous model, it gets bigger in every dimension. Overall length increases by 2.3 inches, width by an inch and height by 1.5 inches. The increase in overall body size also widens the interior, which now has 2.5 inches more legroom and about an inch more headroom in the rear-seat.

Aside from an increase in body size, the 2005 Golf also gets better suspensions. It gets front strut suspensions and new rear multilink suspension. With the new electro-mechanical power steering, the 2005 model is expected to have a more responsive and athletic handling than the previous model. The increase of 80 percent in torsional rigidity further improves its responsiveness and lessens its susceptibility to cabin breaks and groans.

The 2005 Volkswagen Golf is expected to come still in both 3-door and 5-door body styles. New engine types include a 2.0 liter four-cylinder TDI engine and a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder FSI direct injection engine, with four additional engines to be introduced later in the model year. A six speed-manual transmission is also expected to be the standard, with an optional six-speed automatic as an option. Also, a six-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) is expected to be available as option later in the year.
