2005 Volkswagen GTI
For the 2005 model year, the Volkswagen GTI gets a major redesign. Just like
its Volkswagen Golf sibling, it is now in the fifth generation and offers a lot
more of standard features and an improved powertrain and drivetrain. It is expected
to be released late in 2004, earlier than the release of the Golf which would
be mid 2005.
Although no technical specs are yet being released by Volkswagen about the 2005
GTI, many expect that it will be a better performing hatchback. It is expected
to add a 5-door model to its 3-door model hatchback, just like the Golf. More
engine options as well as more powerful engines are expected as well.
Just like the Volkswagen Golf, the GTI gets a larger body for 2005, although
body styling would not change much. The body chassis is also more rigid this time,
with an 80 percent increase in torsional rigidity. It is also now equipped with
front struts suspension and a four-link rear suspension. This changes made is
expected to make the GTI better handling stability and responsiveness.
The previous engines are expected to be retained, although it is also expected
to be more powerful and smoother. The 2.0 liter FSI turbocharged engine that produces
200 hp of power is expected to debut for this model year. Another 2.5 liter inline
5-cylinder engine that produces 150 hp of power is also expected to be introduced.
The 6-speed manual transmission that was previously available only for the VR6
would also become available for the base models while the innovative direct shift
gearbox (DSG) will be introduced as an option later in the model year. Other new
features to be available for 2005 are four-disc brakes, 17 inches alloy wheels
and the stability control system. Inside, it gets a lot of new features including
the comfortable plaid cloth sport seats.
